Auckland: On Wednesday, Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, emphasized India's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of vulnerable sectors, such as dairy and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), during free trade agreement discussions.
Goyal noted that substantial advancements have been achieved in the ongoing negotiations for a trade agreement with New Zealand.
Currently, the fourth round of talks is taking place between senior officials from both nations.
He stated, "India never compromises on the interests of dairy, farmers, and MSMEs. We consistently protect the interests of vulnerable sectors," while addressing the media.
This statement holds significance as New Zealand is a prominent player in the global dairy market and may seek increased access to this sector.
The minister highlighted that both countries have agreed to honor each other's sensitivities.
Historically, India has refrained from offering duty concessions in its trade agreements, particularly in politically sensitive areas like dairy and agriculture.
Goyal remarked, "We respect each other’s sensitivities... we will not touch such issues," while adding that "a trade deal is clearly on the table."
He also mentioned that India is open to enhancing collaboration in agricultural technologies, including dairy machinery.
Goyal is currently on a four-day official visit, leading a business delegation.
When questioned about the possibility of additional negotiation rounds, he responded, "We may not need many more rounds as significant progress has been made."
He further noted that there is immense potential for cooperation between India and New Zealand across various sectors, including defense, agriculture, space, education, and tourism.
